Who Is Gwen?

Gwen is the right candidate for Ward 1 City Council. Born and raised in Massachusetts, in 2019, she relocated from Central Mass to Northampton with her daughter, seeking affordability and stability for her family following a car accident. As her daughter graduated from Northampton High School, they both enrolled in community college together during the pandemic. At age 55, Gwen earned her B.A. from Hampshire College through the Massachusetts Pathways Program, focusing on Native American and Indigenous Studies.

As Chair of the Northampton Housing Partnership, she is well-versed in local, state, and federal policy and how state, federal, and private resources can be deployed to increase accessibility, affordability, and sustainability. Gwen understands that housing must be safe and secure for all Northampton residents at all ages and all stages of life, and will be a tireless advocate for all Ward 1 residents and the community organizations that serve them.

As Ward 1 City Councilor, Gwen will build on a track record of supporting residents and long-time community members affected by worsening environmental issues, rising housing costs and living expenses. Gwen is active in Grow Food Northampton and is a member of the Client Advisory Committee for the Northampton Survival Center. She possesses extensive knowledge and has lived experience in addressing environmental problems such as bioremediation, climate justice, and food sovereignty. Gwen advocates for access to green space and community gardens. Her input on open space planning and climate change are of great value.

As a parent of children who required special education services, Gwen understands how critical inclusive schools are and will advocate for sustainable, equitable schools. Gwen's genuine concerns for her neighbors and greater community, and her insight on a wide range of current issues that affect residents’ lives make her the right candidate for Ward 1.
